Pragmata was called disappointing by Capcom in early internal reviews
Capcom’s Pragmata, a sci-fi action shooter and new IP, has emerged as one of 2026’s best games, strengthening the publisher’s exceptional year alongside Resident Evil: Requiem. Yet the game’s success was far from certain—Capcom internally expressed deep disappointment during early development phases.
Development started in 2019 when Jun Takeuchi, lead of Capcom Development Division 1, tasked younger team members with creating a game set on the moon. That vision became Pragmata, which debuted publicly in 2020 with an initially planned 2022 release. Despite these early milestones, the project faced internal skepticism that threatened its viability, something developers have now reflected on in recent retrospectives.
Capcom shared these development insights during a Father’s Day livestream celebration, noting that Pragmata ultimately validated the team’s continued efforts. The game’s breakthrough success represents a striking turnaround from its disappointing internal reception, exemplifying how ambitious new intellectual properties can overcome early doubt through persistent development and refinement.
