GTA 6 developer Rockstar accused of enforcing crunch, weaponising bonus payments, and ignoring a widening gender pay gap

Multiple current Rockstar employees in the UK, members of the newly formed Rockstar Game Workers Union, have accused the GTA 6 developer of systemic labor issues including gender pay inequity, mandatory crunch culture, and weaponized bonus structures. Speaking anonymously to Game Developer for fear of reprisal, three union members detailed compensation practices they claim are deliberately opaque and often below market rate.

The allegations center on three main issues: a widening gender pay gap the company has allegedly failed to address; crunch culture that appears contractually mandated, requiring employees to actively opt-out rather than making overtime voluntary; and bonus payments that can represent up to a fifth of annual salary and are allegedly used as a tool to enforce compliance rather than reward performance, with little transparency about calculation or justification.

Employees claim Rockstar’s compensation packages change constantly with minimal explanation, resulting in salaries that frequently fall below industry standards. These accusations emerge as Rockstar prepares for the November 2026 console launch of GTA 6, expected to become one of the most lucrative video games in history. The allegations also come as the Rockstar Game Workers Union pushes for voluntary recognition following high-profile employee dismissals in 2025 reportedly tied to union organizing efforts. Though Rockstar has faced similar labor practice criticisms in the past, union members argue the company has made little progress addressing these systemic issues.
