UK workers request voluntary union recognition at Rockstar

Rockstar employees in the UK have formally requested voluntary union recognition from the developer, seeking to establish collective bargaining rights. The request comes from the newly-formed Rockstar Game Workers Union (RGWU), which is part of the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB).

The RGWU was established last month and represents what the IWGB describes as “a significant portion of the workforce” across Rockstar’s five UK studio locations: Edinburgh, Dundee, Lincoln, Leeds, and London. This represents the culmination of organizing efforts that have been underway since 2019.

The union is seeking to address several workplace concerns, including pay transparency, flexible working arrangements, and overtime compensation. The request for recognition also comes amid ongoing legal disputes regarding alleged unfair dismissals at the studio.

According to the IWGB, Rockstar has already begun making improvements to worker conditions in response to organizing pressure. The formal request for voluntary recognition represents an important step toward formalizing dialogue between management and workers, potentially establishing a framework for ongoing collective bargaining.

The move reflects broader trends within the video game industry, where workforce unionization efforts have been gaining momentum in recent years. Rockstar’s scale as one of gaming’s largest and most profitable studios makes this organizing effort particularly significant within the industry.
