Sony announces an end to the PS3 and Vita digital stores

Sony has announced the closure of the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PlayStation Vita, marking the end of digital purchasing support for consoles that have been central to PlayStation’s nearly two-decade history. The phased closure begins in August 2026 in select Latin American and Caribbean markets including Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua, extends to additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries in late 2026, and reaches all other countries globally by July 2027.

The company attributed the shutdown to the incompatibility of the aging hardware with modern payment processing standards and evolving commerce systems that the older consoles cannot support. While new game purchases will no longer be possible after the respective closure dates, Sony committed to allowing players to download previously purchased titles “for the foreseeable future.”

The announcement reflects the natural lifecycle of aging gaming platforms and signals the industry’s broader shift toward digital-only distribution. The decision aligns with Sony’s concurrent announcement to end PlayStation 5 disc production by January 2028, underscoring a fundamental transition toward digital-exclusive gaming across its console ecosystem.
