Sony Kills Physical PS5 Games, Starting in January 2028: A Gigantic Hint That PS6 Will Be “Adorably All-Digital”

Sony announced on July 1, 2026, that it will cease production of physical game discs for PlayStation consoles beginning January 2028. All new games released after that date will be available exclusively in digital format through the PlayStation Store and other retailers, though existing physical titles will remain available.

The company cited “shifting consumer preference” toward digital media as the reason, with digital sales currently accounting for approximately 80-85% of PS5 game revenue. While roughly 70 million disc-based PlayStation games sold in 2025, the physical market has experienced consistent decline.

The announcement has significant implications for the PlayStation 6. Industry analysts, including Ampere Analysis’s Piers Harding-Rolls, view the January 2028 cutoff as strong evidence that the PS6 will launch in late 2028 without a physical disc drive, making it entirely digital-focused.

The decision sparked substantial industry backlash. Game collectors, independent retailers, and preservation organizations expressed concern about consumer ownership, accessibility, and long-term game preservation. iam8bit, a major physical media publisher, stated the company was “profoundly disappointed,” emphasizing that “physical games are vital to games preservation, ownership, and consumer choice.”

The timing is particularly notable given Sony’s 2013 marketing campaign mocking Microsoft’s digital restrictions on Xbox One, when PlayStation executives touted the benefits of physical media—a video that has resurfaced widely on social media. Sony also announced closure of PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita digital storefronts, illustrating risks inherent to digital-only distribution where games depend entirely on corporate servers for availability.
