Akira 4K and IMAX rerelease announced for 2026

Katsuhiro Otomo’s landmark cyberpunk anime Akira is returning to theaters for a limited one-day engagement on September 4, 2026, in 4K and IMAX formats across the United States and Canada. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment are distributing the theatrical rerelease, which will feature both the original Japanese dialogue with English subtitles and an English dub.

Originally released in 1988, Akira remains one of the most influential animated films ever created. The epic story unfolds in Neo-Tokyo, a dystopian metropolis built 31 years after massive destruction, following protagonist Kaneda as he navigates a corrupt, technologically advanced world filled with government conspiracies and supernatural forces.

This marks the second major theatrical run for the 4K restoration, which first premiered in cinemas in 2020. The remaster brought the film’s intricate hand-drawn animation to modern screens with striking clarity, reaching both longtime fans and new audiences discovering the classic for the first time.

Akira’s cultural impact extends far beyond anime, having helped establish the medium as serious artistic expression in Western markets while influencing countless filmmakers and visual artists worldwide. The return to premium IMAX screens underscores the film’s enduring significance and reflects growing demand for theatrical experiences featuring classic anime masterworks.
