Data centers reportedly targeted by cargo thieves, with over $1 million worth of copper and equipment found in two trucks in Chicago
Cargo thieves have been actively targeting data centers, taking advantage of the lucrative infrastructure required to support the AI boom. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office in Illinois discovered a significant theft operation, finding over $1.3 million worth of data center equipment and supplies in two trailers at a truck yard.
The investigation began when authorities received a tip about $300,000 worth of copper wire spools hidden in containers. Upon investigation, they found two trailers containing substantially more contraband, including high-value data center components. The massive value of these supplies reflects the enormous demand for infrastructure to power modern AI systems and data processing operations.
This incident highlights how the AI infrastructure boom, while creating significant economic opportunities, has also attracted criminal attention. Data centers require expensive equipment including copper wiring, power distribution systems, and specialized hardware—all items with high scrap or resale value. The targeting of these facilities represents a new frontier in organized cargo theft, leveraging the visibility and accessibility of data center shipping operations.
