Hideo Kojima’s experimental Xbox exclusive, OD, is reportedly safe from Microsoft cuts

Hideo Kojima’s upcoming horror game OD will continue to be published by Xbox despite Microsoft’s latest round of budget cuts and industry restructuring. According to sources cited by IGN, the experimental project will survive the company’s current reassessment of its gaming investments, marking the second time the title has reportedly avoided cancellation.

OD, first announced in late 2023, remains one of the few games in development at Xbox that will continue receiving funding as the company focuses on its “highest priorities.” The news comes amid significant restructuring across Microsoft’s gaming division, which has already led to funding cuts elsewhere—including IO Interactive’s online fantasy RPG Project Fantasy, resulting in layoffs at the Hitman and 007 developer.

Hideo Kojima, the legendary creator of the Metal Gear Solid franchise and founder of independent studio Kojima Productions, brings considerable industry clout. After leaving Konami, his studio has established itself with notable titles like Death Stranding. OD’s survival suggests Microsoft views the partnership with Kojima as strategically valuable enough to maintain despite broader cost-cutting measures across the gaming portfolio.
