The Ninth Jedi trailer reveals a future for Star Wars beyond the Skywalker saga

Star Wars: Visions is expanding one of its most beloved episodes into a full anime series. “The Ninth Jedi,” originally a standout episode in the five-year-old anime anthology created by director Kenji Kamiyama, is being developed into an eight-episode limited series premiering August 5 on Hulu and Disney+.

The original episode resonated so strongly with fans that it stood out even compared to Lucasfilm’s own major projects. Production I.G.—the acclaimed animation studio renowned for Ghost in the Shell and Psycho-Pass—is handling the expansion. The series will continue the story of protagonist Kara, building on both the original volume 1 episode and its volume 3 sequel titled “Child of Hope.”

Lucasfilm unveiled the first trailer for Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi at Anime Expo. The announcement represents the franchise’s continued investment in exploring bold creative directions through partnerships with international animation studios. This expansion demonstrates Star Wars’ broader push beyond traditional live-action storytelling into diverse anime formats.
