Capcom has accelerated the release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword by three weeks, moving it from September 25 to September 4, 2026. The timing of the announcement—just days after the developer publicly stated they weren’t concerned about September’s congested release schedule—represents a strategic reversal.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is an action-adventure RPG and the first new entry in the dormant Onimusha franchise in over two decades. Set in ancient Kyoto and Edo Japan, players control a magic gauntlet-wielding samurai tasked with vanquishing Genma, mysterious demonic creatures risen from the underworld.

The new September 4 launch date applies across all platforms: Windows (including Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. What was previously the pre-order bonus—including a lion dog charm and sealed curse sword—has been rebranded as an “early adopter bonus.” The bonus now extends availability through September 24 at 11:59 p.m. local time, or September 25 on Steam and Epic Games Store.

The decision strategically positions Onimusha ahead of September’s major releases, including Blood of Dawnwalker on September 3, while avoiding competition with Control: Resonant, Silent Hill: Townfall, and other anticipated titles scheduled for later in the month.
