Soma dev’s next game, Ontos, delayed to 2027 in order to deliver on studio’s “ambitious” vision

Frictional Games, the Swedish developer known for psychological horror titles Amnesia and Soma, has announced that its upcoming game Ontos is being delayed from 2026 to 2027. The studio made the announcement on social media, citing ambition as the reason for the postponement.

According to Frictional Games, Ontos is “our most ambitious game to date, both in terms of its size and scale, and in the depth and layers of our story and gameplay.” This suggests the game will be significantly larger than the studio’s previous titles, which typically lasted between 10 and 11 hours.

The sci-fi psychological thriller was first announced at The Game Awards in December with a general 2026 release window. Players take on the role of Aditi Amani, who is invited to explore their deceased father’s laboratory on the moon base Samsara—a facility where “reality fractures” and truth becomes uncertain. The game is being developed for PS5.

The delay comes amid a busy release calendar, with several other major titles shifting their launch dates. While some industry observers have speculated about the impact of major competing releases in late 2026, Frictional Games has not cited external factors in their announcement, focusing instead on ensuring the game meets their creative vision.
