Why Resident Evil Movie Doesn’t Feature Familiar Characters

Director Zach Cregger has confirmed that his upcoming Resident Evil film will not feature any iconic characters from Capcom’s video game series. In an interview with Empire magazine, Cregger explained that including legacy protagonists like Leon Kennedy or Jill Valentine would feel inorganic to his creative vision. He emphasized that he prioritizes storytelling above all else, noting that attempting to “shoehorn” established game characters into the film would compromise the narrative.

Instead, the movie presents an entirely original story that exists within the Resident Evil universe but functions as a self-contained narrative independent of the games’ existing plots. Cregger, known for directing Weapons and Barbarian, is bringing his distinct creative perspective to the horror franchise rather than adapting existing game storylines.

The announcement has generated mixed fan reactions. While some appreciate Cregger’s commitment to a fresh creative vision, others have expressed disappointment, preferring direct adaptations of the game’s stories and featuring the franchise’s recognizable characters. This approach marks a notable shift from previous Resident Evil film adaptations, which have typically incorporated game characters.
