Union workers establish hardship fund to support devs impacted by layoffs

United Videogame Workers-CWA (UVW-CWA) has launched the Game Worker Hardship Fund, a financial assistance program designed to support game developers affected by the ongoing wave of layoffs sweeping the industry. The fund provides direct cash assistance to unemployed and displaced game workers across the United States and Canada.

Applicants can request financial support in two tiers: up to $1,000 for immediate needs or between $1,000 and $5,000 for more substantial assistance. The fund explicitly covers essential living expenses including groceries, medical bills, and rent—critical support for workers navigating career disruption. Notably, union membership is not required to access the hardship fund, making it available to all game developers regardless of their organizational affiliation.

The initiative represents an organized labor response to the severe job market conditions that have defined the gaming industry in recent years, with major studios conducting mass layoffs. By removing membership barriers, UVW-CWA has positioned the hardship fund as a broad safety net for the entire gaming workforce during a period of significant economic uncertainty.
