Carcass Clad is less story-heavy than Mouthwashing, but ‘a lot of thought’ has gone into it: ‘We haven’t discovered how much we can push it’

Wrong Organ, the developer behind narrative horror game Mouthwashing, is shifting creative direction with its next project, Carcass Clad. Rather than repeating the formula of its previous success, the studio is pivoting to a roguelike co-op tank simulator set in a dystopian city where events have taken a catastrophic turn.

While Carcass Clad represents a departure from Mouthwashing’s narrative-heavy approach, developer Jeffrey Tomec emphasized that storytelling remains central to Wrong Organ’s creative philosophy. However, scripted narrative takes a “back burner” role in the upcoming game. The team is actively exploring how to integrate worldbuilding and storytelling into gameplay in new ways, seeking the optimal balance between narrative elements and roguelike mechanics.

The game features its own distinct setting and world, entirely separate from Mouthwashing’s universe. Tomec explained that every Wrong Organ project stems from a core creative concept, and the studio is investigating how best to weave narrative throughout Carcass Clad’s gameplay loop. The developer suggested the team has not yet discovered the full potential of their narrative approach, implying ongoing experimentation in how they balance storytelling with gameplay design.

Despite moving away from heavy scripted narratives, Wrong Organ’s commitment to worldbuilding and environmental storytelling remains evident. The studio appears to view Carcass Clad as an opportunity to pioneer new methods of narrative integration within the roguelike co-op genre.
