“Am I going back to PS4 days?” - Former PlayStation leader Shuhei Yoshida has tried the Steam Machine, and he doesn’t sound very impressed

Shuhei Yoshida, the former president of SIE Worldwide Studios and later head of PlayStation Indies, has shared his hands-on impressions of Valve’s Steam Machine after spending several hours with the new console-styled PC.

Yoshida’s feedback, posted on X on July 2, was largely critical. He described the 3D performance as “meh” and expressed concern about the system defaulting to 1080p resolution, questioning whether this represents a step backward compared to PS4-era capabilities. He also noted that games take an unexpectedly long time to boot on the system.

However, Yoshida identified some positive aspects: the system UI is user-friendly and easy to navigate, and the ability to boot up simply by pressing a button is convenient. He suggested the device “seems like a decent indie machine.”

The primary obstacle to recommendation, according to Yoshida, is the Steam Machine’s high price tag relative to its performance capabilities. Despite this criticism, Yoshida’s comments come as Valve attempts to establish the Steam Machine as a state-of-the-art home console offering that complements its existing Steam Deck handheld device.
