Diablo music soundtracks are all about the guitar, but Blizzard is changing that

The Diablo series has long been defined by one of gaming’s most distinctive musical identities: steel-string guitar reverb, moody chords, and picked arpeggios that establish the franchise’s dark fantasy atmosphere. This sound, distinctly separate from the high-fantasy grandeur of franchises like Warcraft and The Elder Scrolls, originated with composer Matt Uelmen’s “Tristram” from the original 1997 Diablo, a piece that proved both ancient and modern in its evocation of mysterious folklore.

However, Blizzard is now moving away from this iconic guitar-driven direction for the series. The change marks a significant shift from the sonic signature that has made Diablo immediately recognizable and helped establish its mournful, personal atmosphere across decades of gaming.
