Cyberpunk 2077 passes another extraordinary sales milestone as CD Projekt Red hails “the incredible, lasting strength” of the game

CD Projekt Red announced on July 3, 2026, that Cyberpunk 2077 has surpassed 40 million copies sold worldwide—including standalone purchases and Ultimate Edition bundles featuring the Phantom Liberty expansion. The milestone represents five million additional sales since November 2025, demonstrating sustained momentum for the open-world sci-fi RPG.

The achievement is remarkable given Cyberpunk 2077’s disastrous December 2020 launch. The game shipped in such a broken state that Sony removed it from the PlayStation Store and issued refunds, with console versions being particularly problematic. Industry observers initially questioned whether recovery was possible.

CD Projekt Red’s multi-year remediation effort has instead produced what many consider gaming’s most dramatic comeback story. The studio methodically addressed technical issues through numerous patches and updates, fundamentally transforming player perception. The game now holds “very positive” ratings on Steam and ranks among top-tier open-world titles.

The success has extended to recent platform expansion: the game launched on Switch 2 as a flagship title, reportedly performing exceptionally. CD Projekt Red attributed the milestone to the game’s “incredible, lasting strength,” describing it as “a testament to what CD Projekt does best—creating high-quality, immersive stories that keep players returning for years.” The publisher noted the milestone provides “a great foundation for our upcoming projects in this universe,” referencing the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel currently in development.
