EA Sports Rename FC Pro World Championship After Diogo Jota

EA Sports has renamed the FC Pro World Championship in tribute to Diogo Jota, the former Liverpool and Portugal forward, on the one-year anniversary of his death from a car crash. The esports competition, which carries a $1.5 million prize pool, now honors Jota’s legacy through one of the sport’s most prestigious tournaments.

Beyond his accomplishments as an elite footballer, Jota was an accomplished gamer and esports enthusiast. He owned his own esports team and actively competed in EA FC, demonstrating a genuine passion for gaming alongside his professional football career. This dual interest made the naming tribute particularly meaningful, bridging his two passions and recognizing his contributions to both worlds.

The championship will culminate at the Esports World Cup, where the top EA FC 26 players will compete for the renamed trophy, set to be lifted on July 26. EA Sports made the announcement with permission from Jota’s family, ensuring that his memory will continue to be celebrated through one of gaming’s most competitive stages.
