Mortal Kombat 2 director talks about Cole Young’s fate

The Mortal Kombat franchise has long been synonymous with graphic violence and death, particularly through the iconic video game series’ signature finishing moves known as Fatalities. Both the 2021 Mortal Kombat film reboot and its sequel continued this tradition, featuring shocking character deaths that resonated with audiences.

Director Simon McQuoid revealed in an interview with Polygon, conducted ahead of the film’s Blu-ray release, that he and screenwriter Jeremy Slater deliberately crafted the deaths in Mortal Kombat 2 to maintain audience surprise and investment. While some fans may have anticipated certain characters’ fates, the filmmakers successfully incorporated unexpected character deaths and reversals throughout the sequel.

Interestingly, some character deaths from the original 2021 film were reversed in the sequel, demonstrating the franchise’s willingness to subvert audience expectations. McQuoid’s comments suggest that even when certain deaths seemed predictable, the creative team intentionally designed them to deliver emotional impact and narrative significance, ensuring viewers remained engaged with the story’s higher stakes.
