10 new movies to watch this weekend on Prime Video, Netflix and HBO Max (July 3-5)
This holiday weekend brings several major theatrical hits to streaming platforms, starting with Project Hail Mary, which arrives on Prime Video following its VOD window. Based on Andy Weir’s bestselling science fiction novel and starring Ryan Gosling, the film follows a high school teacher-turned-astronaut who forms an unlikely friendship with an alien companion while on a critical space mission. The narrative blends the survival drama of The Martian with the emotional resonance of E.T.
Obsession, one of 2024’s biggest box office surprises, is now available for digital rental and purchase. The film’s release includes a special “unleashed version” featuring 19 minutes of bonus content, offering viewers extended behind-the-scenes footage and deeper insight into the filmmaking process with director Curry Barker and the cast.
These releases exemplify the accelerating pace at which theatrical blockbusters transition to streaming services, with major studios making their highest-grossing entertainment available on subscription and rental platforms within months of theatrical release. The Fourth of July weekend timing provides subscribers convenient access to premium content during the extended holiday.
