Rise Of The Tomb Raider At 60fps On Switch 2 Would Have Required “Serious Compromises”

Aspyr’s port of Rise of the Tomb Raider for Nintendo Switch 2 has been well-received as a strong example of the platform’s ability to deliver console-quality gaming on the go, earning an 8/10 review score. The port demonstrates the Switch 2’s capacity to handle demanding AAA titles.

However, the development process revealed technical limitations regarding performance targets. Following fan feedback about the lower framerate in the previously released Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, Aspyr explored the possibility of running Rise of the Tomb Raider at 60fps on Switch 2. The developer ultimately determined that achieving this performance target would have required serious compromises to the game’s visual quality and content.

This decision highlights the ongoing technical balancing act in console game porting. Rather than pursuing an aggressive framerate target that would significantly impact the player experience, Aspyr opted to prioritize visual fidelity and maintain the game’s intended design, resulting in a port that still performs well while preserving the full scope of the original experience.
