G.I. Joe is getting a new movie from Danny McBride, but it’s not a comedy

Danny McBride, an actor and writer known for HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones, is developing a new G.I. Joe film for Paramount. McBride discussed the project during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, revealing that his childhood passion for G.I. Joe exceeded his interest in franchises like Star Wars. He initially pitched Paramount a movie centered on the Dreadnoks, a mercenary group operating within the G.I. Joe universe. However, Paramount determined the franchise needed a comprehensive reboot and asked McBride to pitch “G.I. Joe proper” instead. McBride then worked with collaborators from The Righteous Gemstones to develop a new script, which was ultimately selected by Paramount over a competing screenplay written by Max Landis. Despite McBride’s reputation in comedic projects, he emphasized that this G.I. Joe film is not being developed as a comedy.
