Final Fantasy 7 redeemed its worst character Cait Sith in Rebirth
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has reportedly redeemed Cait Sith, a character long considered the weakest link in the original 1997 Final Fantasy 7’s roster of playable characters.
Cait Sith had become infamous among fans for several reasons. First, the character served as the game’s mascot, delivering quip-heavy dialogue that many found unfunny rather than charming. Second, his Limit Break special attacks—the powerful abilities characters can unleash in battle—were notoriously weak and could potentially wipe out the player’s entire party if used poorly, making him a liability in combat. Third, and perhaps most damning to fans, Cait Sith is revealed to be a Shinra spy, making him a traitor to the party’s cause. This betrayal proved difficult for many players to forgive, despite the character’s eventual arc in the original game.
For decades, Cait Sith has remained the consensus weakest character in the beloved RPG’s lineup. However, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth appears to have tackled this reputation directly, redesigning or recontextualizing the character in a way that finally gives him the redemptive arc fans had long hoped for.
