Final Fantasy meets Elder Scrolls in 2 mods for Morrowind
Two new mods for The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind allow players to transform the classic RPG to evoke Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 11, bringing the acclaimed MMO’s visual aesthetic to Bethesda’s beloved single-player experience.
The mods, highlighted recently on Bluesky, offer fans a way to reimagine one of gaming’s most acclaimed RPGs through the lens of another legendary title. “FF-HUD for OpenMW,” first released in May 2025, modifies in-game interface elements such as the cursor to replicate Final Fantasy 11’s visual design. The second mod, “FF11 Style Menu BG and Button Replacer,” uploaded in August 2025, takes the transformation further by replacing Morrowind’s main menu and buttons with custom assets that evoke the iconic aesthetic of the Square Enix MMO.
The mods work through OpenMW, the open-source recreation of Morrowind’s engine that has become central to the modding community’s ongoing efforts to preserve and extend the game’s lifespan. By providing tools to swap visual elements, these mods demonstrate how the community continues to breathe new life into a game released over two decades ago.
This crossover reflects broader trends in gaming culture, where modders blend beloved franchises and create mashups that might never exist officially. Final Fantasy 11, which continues to thrive as an active MMO, and Morrowind, whose legacy endures through dedicated fans and the OpenMW project, represent two different eras of RPG design—yet the mods show how players see value in merging their aesthetics and atmospheres.
