Final Fantasy Remakes Will Take Different Approaches, Says Square Enix

Square Enix has addressed how future Final Fantasy remakes will approach classic titles, signaling that not all remakes will follow the expansive model of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy. The FF7R trilogy represents a substantial reimagining of the 1997 original, transforming it from a traditional turn-based RPG into a modern open-world action experience spread across three games, with the final installment releasing in 2027.

Rather than applying the FF7R approach uniformly across its classic catalog, Square Enix indicated its remake strategy will be case-by-case and title-dependent. Some future remakes may pursue more conservative approaches, prioritizing modernization while maintaining closer fidelity to original designs, rather than comprehensive expansion and narrative restructuring.

The distinction reflects Square Enix’s recognition that different Final Fantasy titles may benefit from different treatment philosophies. While the FF7R trilogy has achieved commercial and critical success through its substantial changes, the company appears to be taking a pragmatic approach to determine which games warrant extensive transformation versus which may benefit more from targeted remastering focused on updating visuals and gameplay mechanics for modern audiences.
