Hasbro should stop looking for a Baldur’s Gate 4 studio and take a leaf out of Larian’s book by trying something new

PC Gamer columnist Fraser Brown argues that Hasbro should abandon its search for a studio to develop Baldur’s Gate 4, suggesting instead that the publisher follow Larian Studios’ example by creating original IP rather than pursuing another mainline franchise installment.

Brown notes that neither Larian Studios nor BioWare veteran James Ohlen showed interest in developing Baldur’s Gate 4, raising the question of who would actually undertake the project. Rather than viewing this as a problem to solve, the columnist contends that this lack of interest indicates the industry should move in a different direction.

The piece references comments made by Ohlen in a recent interview that apparently influenced Brown’s perspective on the matter. The core argument appears to be that Larian’s decision to pursue something new—rather than continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise—resulted in success with Baldur’s Gate 3, suggesting that fresh creative directions may be more valuable than iterating on established franchises. Brown positions this as advice for Hasbro and other publishers to consider new creative ventures rather than automatically greenlight sequel installments to established gaming properties.
