Green Yuri Anime Confirms Nirvana Song for Its Opening Theme, and Dave Grohl Says Kurt Cobain Would Have Loved It

CloverWorks announced at Anime Expo 2026 that its upcoming anime adaptation The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All (known as Green Yuri) will feature a song by legendary grunge band Nirvana as its opening theme. The anime is based on a viral manga by Sumiko Arai and is scheduled to premiere in January 2027.

The collaboration marks a notable intersection of anime and rock music history. Dave Grohl, Nirvana’s drummer and current frontman of Foo Fighters, endorsed the partnership by stating that Kurt Cobain, Nirvana’s late frontman, would have appreciated the use of the band’s music in the project. This implicit approval signals creative alignment between the music and the anime’s vision.

CloverWorks, known for producing acclaimed anime series including Black Butler, My Dress-Up Darling, and Spy x Family, continues to work on high-profile adaptations. The choice to feature Nirvana’s music in a yuri anime opening theme represents an unusual cultural crossover, bringing 1990s grunge sensibilities to contemporary anime storytelling.
