Supergirl Inches Past $100 Million at the Global Box Office After One of the Biggest Second Weekend Drops in Superhero Movie History
Supergirl and Minions & Monsters both underperformed at the Fourth of July weekend box office, signaling potential audience fatigue with major franchises.
DC’s Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock, reached $100.47 million globally but suffered a catastrophic 74% drop in its second weekend, earning just $9.6 million domestically and $9.4 million internationally. The film’s weak performance continues DCU’s recent struggles following an already disappointing opening weekend of $37.1 million.
Illumination’s Minions & Monsters similarly underperformed expectations, grossing $36.4 million over the three-day weekend and $61.4 million across its five-day holiday opening. This marks a significant decline for the typically reliable Minions franchise—The Super Mario Galaxy Movie earned $190.1 million in its five-day debut in April, demonstrating the substantial gap between the franchises’ performance.
Together, the weak performances suggest audiences may be experiencing fatigue with established franchise properties, impacting both major studio tentpoles during what is typically a strong box office period.
