EVE Online’s cross-platform game engine framework is now fully open source

Fenris Creations, the developer of the sci-fi MMO EVE Online (formerly known as CCP Games), has announced the open-source release of Carbon, its cross-platform game engine framework. Carbon is the foundational technology that powers EVE Online’s sprawling persistent universe, complex player-driven economy, and large-scale PvP space battles that have defined the game for over two decades.

The open-source release encompasses more than two dozen Carbon modules, providing developers, players, and researchers with access to significant portions of the platform infrastructure that Fenris Creations uses to build and operate its games. By making the engine framework publicly available, the company is enabling the broader gaming and development community to examine, learn from, and potentially build upon the technology that has powered one of gaming’s most ambitious persistent online worlds.

This move represents a significant commitment to transparency and community engagement, allowing the gaming industry to access battle-tested technology for managing large-scale multiplayer environments, persistent game worlds, and complex player economies. The decision also positions Carbon as a potential foundation for other developers working on similar types of games or virtual worlds.
