GameStop raises its wild Pokémon 30th anniversary prices again and that’s not even the worst part

GameStop has significantly raised its pre-order prices for Pokémon’s 30th Anniversary Trading Card Game set, with the retailer justifying the increases by citing market conditions. In early July, GameStop issued pricing guidance that substantially exceeded manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRPs). For example, the Elite Trainer Box, which carries an MSRP of $49.99, was priced at $129.99 by GameStop — a markup of 260%.

Over the weekend, GameStop instructed its stores to update price tags further, implementing additional increases on the Pokémon anniversary TCG products. The practice has prompted a broader market response, with other trading card retailers raising their own pre-order prices for the September release in line with GameStop’s new pricing structure.

The situation highlights how major retailers can influence the secondary market for collectible products. By establishing higher baseline prices, GameStop has effectively set a new floor that competitors are now matching, regardless of the products’ official MSRPs. This cascading price increase demonstrates how a single retailer’s pricing decisions can reshape market expectations and pricing practices across an entire retail sector.
