CloverWorks has announced a new anime anthology movie titled Grotesqqque, with a trailer debuted during the studio’s industry panel at Anime Expo 2026. The film will be directed by Atsushi Nishigori, known for his significant contributions to some of anime’s most celebrated works.
Nishigori brings an impressive resume to the project. He served as chief animation director for Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time, directed the acclaimed mecha romance Darling in the Franxx, and contributed as character designer for the seminal mecha anime Gurren Lagann. His track record positions him as a major talent in the anime industry.
Originally announced during Anime Expo 2024, Grotesqqque is set to premiere in Japanese theaters on November 6, 2026. The film will have early screenings at the Fantasia International Film Festival in July, giving international audiences a chance to view it ahead of its theatrical release.
According to CloverWorks vice president Yuichi Fukushima, the project was born out of his personal desire to work with Nishigori, highlighting the collaborative vision behind the production. The anthology format allows for diverse creative storytelling while showcasing Nishigori’s directorial capabilities.
