Legendary former Tekken boss says people don’t ‘properly evaluate’ Hidetaka Miyazaki’s ‘remarkable’ FromSoft career
Katsuhiro Harada, the legendary former director of the Tekken franchise, has spoken highly of FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki’s career, characterizing him as a “rather unique, yet extremely serious game developer.” In recent comments on social media, Harada praised Miyazaki’s work as “remarkable,” though he contends that the industry and gaming community don’t “properly evaluate” his full career contributions.
According to Harada’s assessment, much of the focus on FromSoftware’s achievements has centered on the commercial success of the Dark Souls series and related titles. However, Harada argues this overlooks the broader scope of Miyazaki’s work, suggesting that the Souls series itself “was the result of everything Miyazaki and his team had built up through their previous titles.”
The comments highlight a pattern where breakout commercial hits can overshadow a developer’s complete body of work and career progression. Harada’s remarks suggest that Miyazaki’s pre-Souls projects—and the foundational work that led to the creation of the influential Dark Souls franchise—deserve greater recognition when evaluating his legacy and contributions to game development.
