Pokémon Card Thieves Jailed for Stealing £71,000 Stock After Getaway Van Breakdown
Two brothers, Keith and Shane Johnson, have been jailed for stealing £71,000 worth of Pokémon trading cards from a specialty collectibles store. The theft occurred at Celestial Collectibles in Warrington, UK, which specializes in rare Pokémon cards and merchandise. The brothers’ burglary was discovered when their getaway van broke down, stranding them with the stolen stock and leading to their capture.
Both men pleaded guilty to burglary at Birmingham Court last week. Keith Johnson was sentenced to 29 months in prison, while his brother Shane is scheduled to be sentenced later this month, according to Cheshire Police. The incident highlights the significant monetary value of the Pokémon trading card market, which has experienced considerable growth and price appreciation in recent years, making such collections increasingly attractive targets for theft.
This case exemplifies a broader trend of high-value collectibles theft in the UK. The enduring popularity of the Pokémon Trading Card Game among collectors, combined with premium prices commanded by rare cards, has made these items increasingly targeted for criminal activity.
