The Pokémon Company Just Matched Each of Japan’s Top Professional Soccer Teams to a Pokémon
The Pokémon Company has announced a collaboration with the J League, Japan’s top professional soccer association, as part of Pokémon’s 30th anniversary celebrations. Each of the J League’s 60 teams will receive a dedicated Pokémon, carefully selected to reflect each club’s identity, logo, and mascot.
The pairings demonstrate thoughtful alignment between Pokémon and team characteristics. Roasso Kumamoto has been matched with Ponyta, whose equine nature mirrors the club’s horse logo and mascot. Akita Blaublitz received Horsea, a Water/Dragon-type Pokémon that evolves into Kingdra, complementing the club’s blue dragon mascot, Blaugon.
The collaboration ties into the J League’s current campaign, “Evolution! The J League is evolving,” which naturally aligns with Pokémon’s core mechanic of evolution. Each team will distribute unique merchandise featuring their assigned Pokémon to supporters, combining the appeal of professional soccer with one of gaming’s most recognizable franchises.
