“Don’t Kill the Disc”: Petition Against Sony PS5 and PS6 Digital Media Plans Reaches 120,000 Signatures
Sony announced it will discontinue physical game disc production for PlayStation consoles starting January 2028, sparking widespread backlash from the gaming community. After this date, all new PlayStation game releases will be available exclusively through the PS Store, though retailers may sell redemption codes for digital copies. The company also hinted that the PS6 will be an all-digital console.
The announcement triggered a significant public response. A Change.org petition titled “Don’t Kill the Disc,” launched by Canadian independent retailer PNP Games, has exceeded 120,000 signatures. Digital Foundry viewers overwhelmingly opposed the move, with over 65,000 participants voting against itβ86% in total. The gaming community’s response emphasizes that opposition is not to digital gaming itself, but rather to the elimination of physical media as an option.
The decision represents a major shift in how PlayStation games will be distributed. Players expressing concern about the change cite issues around digital ownership, internet accessibility, game preservation, and the ability to resell or trade physical copies. The move is expected to further accelerate the industry’s broader shift toward digital-only distribution.
