Windows 11 will soon be able to reinstall itself and your drivers without a USB drive via new ‘Cloud Rebuild’ recovery method

Microsoft has announced a new recovery method for Windows 11 called Cloud Rebuild that will enable users to reinstall the operating system and device drivers over the internet without requiring a USB drive or installation media.

The Cloud Rebuild feature represents a significant improvement to Windows recovery options by functioning even when the operating system is unbootable. During the recovery process, the tool downloads the Windows OS installation files along with the necessary device drivers from the cloud and installs them seamlessly, ensuring that the system is fully functional once the reinstallation is complete.

This new recovery method is designed to restore a PC to a “clean, known-good state,” which is particularly valuable for users troubleshooting severe system issues, malware infections, or corrupt installations. Previously, recovering a non-bootable Windows PC typically required access to a USB installation drive and a separate computer to create installation media, presenting challenges for users without those resources readily available.

Cloud Rebuild simplifies the recovery process by leveraging internet connectivity as the primary delivery mechanism for installation files, making system restoration more accessible. The automatic inclusion of device drivers in the recovery process eliminates the additional step of manually installing drivers after OS reinstallation, streamlining the user experience.
