Xbox Layoffs “Heavily Impact” The Accessibility Team, Too

Microsoft’s Xbox division announced layoffs affecting 1,600 employees on July 6, with the company’s accessibility team experiencing particularly heavy cuts. According to reports from affected employees, a senior user researcher for accessibility at ZeniMax Media was among those terminated, alongside multiple members of the Bethesda User Research Team. Zach Clothier, the accessibility test lead for Microsoft gaming accessibility, was also mentioned in connection with the layoffs.

The concentrated impact on the accessibility department raises industry concerns about future accessibility support for Xbox games and services. Accessibility teams are critical for ensuring gaming experiences remain inclusive for players with various disabilities, including visual, hearing, motor, and cognitive impairments.

The layoffs represent one of the gaming industry’s largest workforce reductions in recent years and reflect broader corporate cost-cutting measures amid ongoing industry consolidation. The decision to significantly reduce accessibility resources is particularly noteworthy as the gaming industry has been gradually expanding disability accommodations over the past decade.
