XBOX CEO Thinks Minecraft Is ‘Massively Underinvested’

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has revealed that Minecraft is “massively underinvested” in by Microsoft, signaling a strategic shift for the gaming giant’s most valuable franchise. The declaration comes amid a major corporate restructuring that includes substantial workforce reductions and a business-wide reset of Xbox’s operations.

Microsoft is eliminating 4,800 roles across the company, with approximately 3,200 positions—roughly 67% of the total—coming from Xbox game development. The layoffs are part of a broader acknowledgment that Microsoft had become “overextended” in its gaming ambitions. Despite these cuts, Sharma’s public letter to staff indicates that Minecraft will receive renewed focus as a centerpiece of Xbox’s future strategy.

Most significantly, Asha Sharma will now assume direct oversight of Mojang Studios, Minecraft’s developer, marking a structural change in how the franchise is managed. The decision reflects Xbox’s determination to better compete with Roblox, a rival platform that has rapidly grown in recent years by offering user-generated content creation tools. While Minecraft dominates in creative gameplay and player count, Roblox has increasingly captured attention with its platform model.

Sharma’s comments suggest that Minecraft has been constrained by insufficient investment and structural limitations in its previous organizational arrangement. By placing the franchise under her direct control, Xbox aims to accelerate development, expand features, and enhance the game’s competitive position across its diverse platform ecosystem.

The restructuring represents a strategic recalibration for Xbox, moving away from broad portfolio expansion toward concentrated investment in flagship properties that can generate significant returns. Minecraft’s proven commercial success and cultural impact position it as a natural anchor for this refocused strategy.
