Bethesda pivots to “franchise-centric” planning model amid Xbox restructure

Bethesda is implementing a “franchise-centric” planning model as part of a broader Xbox restructuring that will eliminate 3,200 jobs—approximately 20% of the division’s workforce. The strategic shift, announced by CEO Jill Braff, reflects leadership’s assessment that the company must “return to sustainable growth” in response to current industry conditions.

Under the new approach, Bethesda will realign its organizational focus away from a planning model centered on individual studio outputs. Instead, the publisher will concentrate resources on its most valuable and established franchises. This represents a significant consolidation strategy, suggesting fewer concurrent projects across the studio portfolio in favor of supporting proven intellectual properties.

The restructuring reflects broader industry trends toward resource concentration amid economic pressures and shifting market dynamics in gaming. By narrowing its strategic focus to core franchises rather than maintaining a diversified studio output model, Bethesda aims to improve operational efficiency and financial sustainability.
