LoL Patch 26.14 Preview: Locke and Hextech Rocketbelt Nerfs
Riot Games has unveiled balance changes for League of Legends Patch 26.14, introducing substantial meta adjustments following observations from the Mid-Season Invitational. Lead gameplay designer Matt ‘Phroxzon’ Leung-Harrison shared the developer’s rationale for the upcoming modifications, which reflect shifting priorities in both competitive and solo queue environments.
The patch responds to meta evolution triggered by previous bot lane champion nerfs. With traditional bot lane picks weakened, mage champions have risen in prevalence—a shift the developers view as acceptable. However, Seraphine has emerged as an outlier, proving too dominant in solo queue and warranting further balance attention.
Notably, newly released champion Locke will receive nerfs just one patch after launch, indicating the champion launched in an overtuned state despite achieving popularity in the initial patch cycle. Alongside Locke’s adjustments, the patch includes buffs to Nami, Yunara, and Corki, suggesting efforts to broaden the viable champion pool and diversify strategic options across roles.
These changes represent Riot’s ongoing commitment to responsive balance management, particularly following major international competition. The MSI observations have directly informed patch direction, with developers using high-level play data to shape solo queue and ranked environments. The combination of nerfs to overperforming champions and buffs to underutilized picks aims to restore meta health and competitive diversity ahead of future competitive tournaments.
