Microsoft hit with class-action lawsuit over “unreasonable and excessive noise” from datacenter
Microsoft has been hit with a class-action lawsuit over excessive noise emissions from its Fairwater datacenter located in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin. Local residents claim that the facility generates “unreasonable and excessive noise” that negatively impacts their quality of life, seeking unspecified compensation for damages caused by the noise pollution.
The Fairwater datacenter, unveiled in September 2025, is one of the world’s most powerful and advanced facilities. Equipped with NVIDIA’s GB200 GPUs, each rack can process 865,000 tokens per second, supporting Microsoft’s AI and cloud computing operations.
The lawsuit highlights a growing challenge facing tech companies operating large-scale computing facilities. The cooling systems and power infrastructure required to maintain high-performance GPUs generate significant noise output. While Microsoft has not yet publicly detailed its noise mitigation efforts, the lawsuit suggests residents believe current measures are inadequate.
This case represents an emerging tension between the computational demands of modern AI infrastructure and quality-of-life concerns in host communities. As AI workloads expand globally, datacenters are becoming increasingly large and powerful, often resulting in elevated noise and other environmental impacts on neighboring areas.
