Nintendo confirm replaceable battery EU Switch 2 model, end of Switch 1 production

Nintendo has announced a new version of the Switch 2 that will feature a user-replaceable battery to comply with European Union regulations. Simultaneously, the company confirmed the discontinuation of original Switch generation consoles in Europe, with production of the Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED models ending in mid-February 2027.

Despite the discontinuation date, Nintendo pledges that original Switch consoles will remain widely available throughout 2026, marking approximately a decade of active production support following the console’s 2017 launch. This extended availability window provides consumers a final opportunity to purchase the original hardware before the transition to new hardware standards.

The regulatory shift reflects Europe’s commitment to environmental sustainability and consumer protection through increasingly stringent electronics standards. The mandate for replaceable batteries represents significant industry pressure, compelling manufacturers to redesign products for repairability and longevity. Nintendo’s approach—developing a compliant Switch 2 variant—demonstrates the practical challenges of mid-lifecycle hardware adaptation while underscoring the gaming industry’s evolving relationship with EU environmental policy and the broader movement toward more sustainable electronic device design.
