Sony Tries To Change The Subject After Killing PlayStation Discs
On July 1, Sony announced a controversial decision to end physical disc production for PlayStation games beginning in January 2028. The announcement generated immediate and widespread backlash, accumulating 165 million views and sparking anger across Sony’s social media platforms.
Seeking to move past the controversy, Sony remained silent on social media for nearly a week. On Tuesday, PlayStation attempted to restart the conversation by posting about its new FlexStrike wireless fight stick. However, this effort to change the subject spectacularly backfired.
The post immediately faced overwhelming negative responses. Within the first two hours on X, it received over 30,000 replies and nearly 9,000 quote tweets, with one source reporting 57,000 total replies. Instagram saw over 6,000 angry comments. The vast majority of responses continued criticizing the disc discontinuation rather than engaging with the new hardware announcement.
Fans had hoped Sony would either reverse the controversial decision or at least address their concerns in the days following the announcement. Instead, the company’s silence followed by an unrelated product promotion only intensified frustration. The failed social media pivot demonstrates the depth of player dissatisfaction with the end of physical gaming on PlayStation.
