Xbox Game Pass subscription numbers are reportedly well below where Microsoft wants them to be
Xbox Game Pass subscriptions have reportedly fallen to approximately 30 million users, representing a significant shortfall from Microsoft’s ambitious targets. The subscription service declined from 34 million subscribers reported in September 2024, falling well below Microsoft’s goal of 77 million by July 2026—a target revealed during the FTC’s investigation into Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard acquisition.
Microsoft’s original projections, disclosed in legal proceedings, were even more aspirational, targeting 100 million paid Game Pass members by 2030. The underperformance reflects broader strategic challenges at Xbox, with CEO Asha Sharma acknowledging that Game Pass and other major initiatives “did not grow at the pace we expected.”
The failed expansion strategy has prompted significant organizational changes. Bloomberg reports that Microsoft invested nearly $80 billion over the past decade in acquisitions and initiatives to support Xbox and Game Pass, yet these efforts have not delivered the anticipated growth. In response, Microsoft announced 3,200 layoffs at Xbox, divesting from studios and implementing cutbacks to “reset” the business. While Sharma noted these initiatives drove “meaningful value,” the growth trajectory fell short of expectations, forcing the company to reassess its gaming strategy.
