What exactly is going on with Marvel’s Blade? Arkane Lyon’s fate remains unclear in the wake of Xbox’s controversial ‘reset’
Microsoft announced a major restructuring of its Xbox division on July 6, with 3,200 immediate layoffs and another 1,600 planned over the next financial year—a 20% reduction of Xbox’s workforce. The overhaul, led by newly-appointed Xbox leader Asha Sharma, represents a strategic pivot toward established franchises following years of ambitious acquisitions dating back to the 2010s.
As part of the restructuring, Xbox is divesting from four studios. Double Fine and Compulsion Games are returning to independence with Microsoft-provided runway funding and retain ownership of their intellectual property. Ninja Theory and Undead Labs have been sold to undisclosed new owners. Notably, only 350 of the 3,200 immediate job cuts are directly tied to these four studios, indicating substantial reductions across Xbox’s remaining operations.
The most ambiguous situation involves Arkane Studios, developer of the in-development Marvel’s Blade game. Unlike the other studios facing defined new arrangements, Arkane’s future remains uncertain, with Xbox stating the studio is reviewing “potential strategic options.” This leaves Arkane’s staff to negotiate their own path forward, while the status of Marvel’s Blade—one of Xbox’s notable upcoming exclusive projects—remains unclear.
