Bethesda union says company HR forced staff to remove a display honoring their laid-off colleagues
Microsoft’s Xbox division conducted sweeping layoffs affecting 1,600 employees across its gaming portfolio this week, marking the first phase of a comprehensive restructuring plan that aims to reduce headcount by 3,800 positions by the end of fiscal 2027. Bethesda Game Studios was among the divisions hit significantly by these cuts as the company pursues its broader reorganization objectives.
In response to the layoffs, employees at Bethesda Game Studios’ Rockville, Maryland office created a “Celebration of Service” memorial display to honor their colleagues who had been laid off. This tribute served as a gesture of workplace solidarity during a difficult period for the studio. According to the Bethesda Game Studios Union, however, the company’s human resources department instructed staff to dismantle the memorial almost immediately after its assembly.
The union’s allegation regarding the forced removal of the memorial highlights growing tensions between worker advocacy and management responses to mass layoffs. The incident raises questions about how companies handle expressions of solidarity and memorialization during periods of significant organizational change, and whether restricting such displays may run counter to employee interests and morale during already difficult circumstances.
