Workers at MindsEye studio protesting controversial fan event this weekend after multiple rounds of layoffs

Build a Rocket Boy staff are organizing a protest outside the studio’s Edinburgh offices on Saturday, July 11th against an upcoming “all-expenses-paid” fan event. The developers object to the studio funding the expensive initiative—which includes flying in community members to Scotland, providing two nights’ accommodation, and covering return flights—at a time when Build a Rocket Boy has undergone severe cost-cutting measures.

The protest follows significant layoffs at the studio, including approximately 300 redundancies in June 2025 following MindsEye’s release and additional workforce reductions earlier in 2026. The fan event will showcase an updated build of MindsEye, the critically maligned action game released last year.

The workers’ demonstration is scheduled to begin at 10am and will reportedly be supported by the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB), other union representatives, and members of the general public. The protest reflects growing tensions between the studio’s spending priorities and the significant job losses affecting the workforce, highlighting broader industry concerns about resource allocation during periods of financial restructuring.
