Dune 3’s new trailer teases big changes from the books
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune film trilogy is nearing its conclusion with the release of a new trailer for Dune: Part Three. The trailer reveals significant narrative developments that appear to deviate from Frank Herbert’s source material, suggesting the filmmaker will continue taking creative liberties in adapting the complex sci-fi epic.
The trailer indicates substantial time has elapsed since Dune: Part Two, with Paul Atreides having ascended to Padishah Emperor and ruled long enough to conquer the galaxy and destroy thousands of worlds, according to dialogue from Jason Momoa’s returning character Duncan Idaho.
Despite Paul’s dominance, a conspiracy emerges against his regime. Princess Irulan, portrayed by Florence Pugh, partners with a new character played by Robert Pattinson—described as channeling a Roy Batty aesthetic from Blade Runner—to orchestrate a coup. The trailer hints that Zendaya’s Chani may play a crucial role in this regime change plot, potentially becoming instrumental in the attempt to overthrow Paul’s rule.
The footage also showcases large-scale battle sequences featuring desert landscapes and sand, maintaining the epic scope of Villeneuve’s previous Dune films. These visual elements suggest Part Three will deliver the high-stakes conflict audiences expect from the trilogy’s conclusion.
