One Final Fantasy Game Is Shutting Down, But You’ve Still Got Time To Play
Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, a free-to-play mobile and PC game, will shut down on October 6, 2026, less than three years after its Steam launch. The game initially released on mobile in September 2023 before coming to Steam in December of that year, going offline at 11pm PT (October 7, 2am EDT, 7am BST).
Square Enix announced the closure in an end-of-service notice, apologizing for the “abrupt nature of this announcement.” The publisher stated that while it had “worked to provide the best possible experience for our players” since launch, it “determined that it will be difficult to continue doing so.” No specific reasons were given for the decision. Sales of the game’s premium currency, Red Crystals, have already been halted.
Ever Crisis was a gacha RPG that recreated the events of Final Fantasy VII alongside related spinoffs like Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, and Before Crisis. Despite its short lifespan, the game achieved notable commercial success: AppMagic estimates put downloads at 3.7 million with approximately $100 million in lifetime revenue, though recent earnings have declined to $680,000 in the last 30 days. The game was particularly popular in Japan, accounting for about one-third of all lifetime downloads, with North America representing roughly one-quarter of players.
The shutdown adds Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis to Square Enix’s growing list of mobile titles taken offline in recent years, continuing a broader industry trend of live-service game closures.
