17 years later, Minecraft is finally adding somewhere to sit
After 17 years, Minecraft is finally adding a dedicated seating mechanic through craftable cushions, addressing one of the game’s most requested features. The new cushions, craftable from wool slabs and placeable on flat surfaces, provide a straightforward way for players to sit—moving beyond existing workarounds like using boats, minecarts, or animals. According to Minecraft producer Gustav Höglund, this seemingly simple addition opens up significant new possibilities for building and gameplay.
The latest preview build also introduces single-use straw beds, crafted from hay bales, that allow players to sleep through the night without resetting their spawn point. This complements the existing bed system while offering more flexibility for survival mode gameplay.
The community response has been enthusiastic, with players excited about both the practical utility and unexpected mechanical possibilities these items enable. The additions represent a significant quality-of-life improvement after nearly two decades—while Minecraft introduced beds back in 2011, the addition of dedicated cushions marks an important expansion of player comfort and environmental interaction options. Full release is planned for later this year.
